Prince Edward County wines set to make a splash in Ottawa – a Constantly Cooking Contest!

Like many lovers of good food, I’m also a fan of good wines. Some of the best in the world are made almost in my own backyard – in beautiful Prince Edward County, just a short drive from Canada’s capital, Ottawa. These wines are just ‘good Canadian wines’ – Wine Spectator Magazine actually dubbed The County (as those in the know like to call it) the world’s least-known great wine zone”.

Last year I had the pleasure of attending  a fabulous event hosted by Savvy Company called ‘County in the City’; I wrote about it for Ottawa at Home’s website. It was a great ‘taste and buy’ event where guests got to meet and mingle with the people who are actually making wine in The County (rather than simply the reps who distribute them, as is the case at some other wine tasting events). I learned so much, and came away with a whole new appreciation for the region and its wines.

Savvy Company is hosting its second annual County in the City event at the National Arts Centre on April 18. I’d like you to join me there – simply leave a comment here on the blog or on the Constantly Cooking Facebook page about your favourite Ontario wine (or your favourite wine and food pairing). A random draw will be held on Monday, April 15. Good luck to all!

  1. I really enjoy Sandbanks wine! But I also just enjoy picking up a new-to-me bottle in the Ontario section

  2. Cave Springs wine all the way! Also a beautiful spot to visit if you’re ever out in wine country in southern Ontario.

  3. Sandbanks Estates’ Sauvignon Blanc is a delightful wine that pairs really well with just about anything from chicken to sushi. Their Gewürztraminer is also great for sipping on it’s own outside on a warm day!

  4. Susan Roseman says:

A personal favourite is Inniskillin Niagara 2010 Pinot Grigio. The palate is dry, medium in body and high in acidity, making it refreshing, almost salty, with citrus, green apple and melon. It pairs nicely with ling cod or bass.

  5. I am a fan of the Cave Spring Riesling and its versatility in pairing with food: goes well with some homemade spring rolls, as well as with smoked fish appetizers or even with turkey dinner!

  6. Karen Richardson says:

Recent opportunity to taste Karlo Estates Van Alstine Port style red … one of a kind wonderful!

  7. Gary Mooney says:

There are many County wines that we enjoy, but the #1 crowd pleaser is Sandbanks Baco Noir.

  8. Maggie Barron says:
