Long gone are the days of rubber chicken dinners in nondescript banquet halls. Today’s trend sees fundraising events specifically focused around food, making for a more memorable and meaningful experience. A good example is Ottawa’s Harmony House; their annual fundraiser, The Red and The White, features top chefs dishing up fancy fare in an atmosphere that is effervescently festive.
This year’s edition, taking place Wednesday, January 16, includes three stellar local chefs: Caroline Ishii of Zen Kitchen, Katie Brown of Beckta and Sarah Allen of Union: Local 613 (who graciously offered to fill in for Charlotte Langley of Hooked in Toronto, who is sadly unable to attend). Talk about girl power in the kitchen!
Along with cooking demos and tasting stations featuring both the chef’s creations as well as products from other great local food purveyors, you’ll also get to sample beverages from generous Eastern Ontario breweries and wineries.
Harmony House is the only second-stage women’s shelter in Ottawa; for 25 years, it has provided safe, affordable transitional housing for women and children who are survivors of domestic violence. Last year’s event certainly exceeded my expectations. There’s something magical about knowing you are helping a truly deserving organizing while you sip excellent beverages and taste insanely good food.
This year the event will be held at AshburyCollege, 362 Mariposa Avenue in Rockliffe, starting at 7pm. While they last, tickets are available here. I hope you’ll join us to feast for a great cause.
